Cluster observations of electron holes in association with magnetotail reconnection and comparison to simulations
[1] Large-amplitude (up to 50 mV/m) solitary waves, identified as electron holes, have been observed during waveform captures on two of the four Cluster satellites during several plasma sheet encounters that have been identified as the passage of a magnetotail reconnection x line. The electron holes were seen near the outer edge of the plasma sheet, within and on the edge of a density cavity, a...
متن کاملObservations of electron phase-space holes driven during magnetic reconnection in a laboratory plasma
This work presents detailed experimental observations of electron phase-space holes driven during magnetic reconnection events on the Versatile Toroidal Facility. The holes are observed to travel on the order of or faster than the electron thermal speed, and are of large size scale, with diameter of order 60 Debye lengths. In addition, they have 3-D spheroidal structure with approximately unity...

متن کاملAutoresonant phase-space holes in plasmas.
Electron phase-space holes are formed and controlled in a plasma by adiabatic nonlinear phase locking (autoresonance) with a chirped frequency driving wave. The process has a threshold on the driving amplitude and involves dragging a void region in phase space into the bulk of the distribution via persistent Cherenkov-type resonance.
متن کاملFormation of phase space holes and clumps.
It is shown that the formation of phase space holes and clumps in kinetically driven, dissipative systems is not restricted to the near threshold regime, as previously reported and widely believed. Specifically, we observe hole-clump generation from the edges of an unmodulated phase space plateau, created via excitation, phase mixing and subsequent dissipative decay of a linearly unstable bulk ...
